Tropical Fish Quick and Easy Tips for Beginners

Working with tropical fish can be both beautiful and rewarding. If you have never owned them before, you are in for a treat. Here are a few tips for those just starting out.

There is more to taking care of fish than putting them in a plastic bowl and watching them swim around. If they stay in that plastic bowl, they won’t be swimming for long. Just like you need room to move around and breathe, so do your fish.

Choose an appropriate aquarium for your fish – You may own one fish now but you probably plan on owning several more. Buy an aquarium based on the eventual size of your fish and not how they look now. Some fish can grow to be several inches long. That can lead to cramped quarters in a ten gallon tank.

Choose a species to begin your aquarium – Notice that we used the word “begin.” As well as having more fish you’ll also want to add new species to your colorful underwater world. Even at that rate, starting with just one species lets you get used to taking care of tropical fish. The more you learn you’ll be able to tell which species live well together and which will behave badly.

Choose what type of aquarium to buy – There are two choices: freshwater or saltwater. Freshwater fish are plentiful and need less maintenance to live a happy life. On the other hand, saltwater aquariums will cost you a pretty penny to get started and maintain.

Find the right equipment – For that advice, you can go to books or a pet store. Pet store personnel will be able to tell you exactly what you need to accommodate your fish. All fish need a filtration system and light, but the degree of each varies. A basic filter may work for freshwater fish (along with a few bottom feeders to clean the tank even more) but an under-gravel filter in addition to an outside filter may be needed for saltwater tropical fish.

Fish food – Fish need to swim and eat. Feeding them the wrong food can make them just as sick as the wrong water environment. Most fish like the flakes but there are some that can benefit from worms and other morsels. It is important to know what the like to eat and how expensive it will be to feed them.

Plan before you buy – Bringing home the fish is the last thing you do. Be sure that your environment is set up and you are familiar with how to take care of your fish before you actually acquire them. Things will sail more smoothly that way.

Are you new to fish care? No matter; you can use these quick tips to get you off on the right foot.
